Located 3,120 meters above sea level, Taktsang Monastery was built in 1692 and almost all of its structures were lost in a fire in 1998, but were restored to their original form in 2005 after a US$2 million restoration project. Taktsang Monastery's isolated location has left it rich in nature, and its history and spectacular scenery have made it one of Bhutan's most popular tourist destinations.
Tourism is also a major source of electricity in Bhutan, along with hydroelectric power generation.Important IndustriesThe country was hit hard by a pandemic of the new coronavirus that began in 2020, but has resumed accepting tourists since September 2022.
