How well do Japanese newspapers report the world? Is the content of their reporting biased? How do they portray the world? How is its international coverage changing?
Since 2015, GNV has been collecting data on international news coverage by examining all news stories from Japan's three major newspapers (Asahi, Mainichi, and Yomiuri). Furthermore, by analyzing all international news articles according to 11 categories, including news fields, relevant countries, and impressions given by the articles, we make it possible to consider international news coverage from diverse perspectives.
Finally released this year.Monthly reportsummarizes these data on a monthly basis and visualizes the main results. By displaying the data on a monthly basis, it is possible to see trends in international reporting on a continuous and long-term basis. (*1)
The Monthly Report is divided into three main sections.
1. overall analysis of international press coverage
The monthly and annual percentages of the three companies, their monthly trends, and the percentages of the pages in which they appear are shown. For example, it is clear here that international coverage in Japanese newspapers currently often amounts to less than 101 TP3T of the total.
2. analysis by region/country
The chart shows the percentage and volume of coverage by region and country. Of particular interest here is the analysis of the volume of news coverage by country. The countries that receive the most and the least media coverage in each region are indicated by color, so that they can be seen at a glance. Please take a look at this chart as well as the regional chart. (*2)
3. analysis of article impressions
We analyzed the content of each article by dividing it into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral, and in the Monthly Report we also show the percentage of each of the three companies and the changes in each, as well as by region. Overall, negatives far outnumber positives. However, this is not necessarily the case in some regions. In what regions do the positives outnumber the negatives?
The Monthly Report contains only data, not analysis, of international coverage by GNV,News ViewPlease take a look at the article in the following section. We hope that everyone will consider the problems of international reporting by combining this data with world events.
