Even a culture shared by many countries changes its appearance in different places.
Christmas, a traditional Christian event widely influential as a world religion, is no exception.
At Christmas in Ukraine, people walk down the street side by side, singing songs.
Interestingly, the Christmas song sung in Ukraine, "kolyadka" (kolyadka), is not of Christian origin. It was originally sung by the local population before Christianity took root in Ukraine, and was transformed into a Christmas carol when the region became Christianized.
Thus, Christmas in a nutshell takes on a wide variety of forms that reflect the history of the region.
Understanding the history of a country or region can go a long way toward understanding what is happening in that country.
