Part 3: Collaboration to Protect and Expand International Reporting
Japan's international reporting is limited in volume and heavily biased geographically, with a small number of foreign correspondents covering large areas with limited resources (personnel). This situation could be exacerbated if resources are further reduced. In this proposal, we will explore ways to enable more efficient and diversified international reporting by news organizations to share resources and coordinate the location of their reporting offices to share information on their coverage. While the session will focus on examples from Africa, the proposal itself is not region-specific.
Proposer:Virgil Hawkins(Graduate School of International Public Policy, Osaka University)
What is this series?
This series of workshop-style events aims to bring together media professionals, researchers, students, and the general public to explore ways to improve the current crisis in journalism in Japan by focusing on one specific proposal each time. In each session, starting from a proposal, participants will discuss its feasibility and issues from various perspectives through dialogue, and practically consider how journalism should be in the future. The fourth and subsequent sessions will be announced in due course.
